Explore Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), a chronic inflammatory disease causing significant upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in children and adults. EoE results from a complex interaction between environmental allergens and the immune system, leading to increased eosinophils in the esophagus and long-term inflammation. To prevent long-term complications, advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, must have a comprehensive understanding of EoE and its treatments.

Get ready to gain the essential knowledge needed to effectively evaluate and manage patients with EoE at this COMPLIMENTARY course!

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the clinical presentation of EoE:
    • Recognize the typical symptoms of EoE in adults, such as dysphagia, food impaction, chest pain and persistent heartburn
    • Identify the nonspecific symptoms in children, including vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty gaining weight and failure to thrive
  2. Comprehend the pathogenesis of EoE:
    • Explain the role of environmental allergens and the immune system in the development of EoE
    • Describe how increased eosinophil presence in the esophagus leads to chronic inflammation, fibrosis and structuring
  3. Understand key diagnostic methods to effectively identify EoE:
    • Apply knowledge of patient’s history and symptom presentation to diagnose accurately and efficiently EoE in both children and adults
    • Utilize appropriate diagnostic methods, such as endoscopy and biopsy, to confirm the presence of eosinophils in the esophagus
  4. Identify Effective Treatment Strategies for EoE:
    • Outline the primary treatments for EoE, including dietary modifications, pharmacotherapy and endoscopic procedures
    • Develop individualized treatment plans that address both immediate symptom relief and long-term management to prevent esophageal fibrosis
  5. Educate patients and families about EoE:
    • Provide comprehensive education to patients and their families about EoE, its causes and its symptoms
    • Advise on lifestyle and dietary changes to manage the condition and the importance of compliance to treatment to minimize the risk of long-term complications
